Photo Essay: In the Field with Regino’s Farm

We recently got the chance to visit Regino’s Farm in Mount Vernon, where we pulled some weeds, checked out their greenhouse, rinsed some carrots, and learned about the hard work that Regino’s Farm has been putting in to bring fruits and vegetables to our markets since 2019!

The NFM Team got together for a work party and farm visit on Regino’s Farm

Regino’s Farm leases their farmland from Viva Farms, an organization with a mission to make farming more accessible for beginning farmers and small family farms

Horsetail is a weed that can interfere with yield by crowding out crops, like these strawberry plants

The NFM team got to work to start pulling some horsetails out of the strawberry fields

We also visited Regino’s Farm’s greenhouse, where they are currently incubating seedlings to get planted later in the season

The seeds grow in the safety and warmth of the greenhouse until they are strong enough to be planted out in the field

Isai, Regino’s son, picked out plant starts to send home with the NFM team

Isai explained that during the winter, some of their washing crew had to use a torch to keep the carrots from freezing as they washed them

Watching the carrots transform from brown to orange under the pressure of the water was so satisfying!
