Help Keep our Farmers Markets Growing!

The Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance (NFMA) is a community-based 501(c)3 organization dedicated to bringing Washington State’s small family farmers into Seattle neighborhoods to direct-sell their produce.

These markets are a key component in the preservation of local farmland and the health of Washington's agriculture - so it is extremely important that these markets stay alive in our city

Our sixth annual fundraiser "An Incredible Feast - Where the Farmers are the Stars" takes place Sunday, August 22, 5-8pm at the site of the U-District Farmers Market, outdoors at the University Heights Center for the Community.

Since 1993, our markets have depended on generous help from the City of Seattle's Office of Economic Development, King County Agricultural Programming, numerous Seattle-based groups and individuals, and talented help from volunteers in order to stay in operation.  The true cost of food in our country has largely been hidden - government subsidies, under-priced imports, and mass-production of fresh and processed foods have lead us all to believe that food should be cheap and easy to obtain.  But we are, in truth, paying dearly for this food to the tune of large-scale environmental damage, unfair labor practices, and serious compromises to our health and safety.

Farmers markets make it possible for small, sustainable, diverse farms to stay in business and maintain our local sources of safe, healthy, high-quality food.

In addition, the NFMA farmers markets:
• Accept market vouchers for low-income shoppers and WIC clients
• Accept food stamps at all markets
• Coordinate farmer donations of fresh produce to neighborhood food banks (in 2005 our farmers donated over 35,000 pounds of food to local food banks!).

The NFMA does not own any of the properties on which the markets take place.    Our biggest challenge is to secure permanent locations for farmers markets in the city - to ensure that future generations of farmers and city dwellers will be able to enjoy the important benefits these markets provide.

Your tax deductible donation helps the NFMA continue to grow and serve our farmers and communities. Every little bit helps! You can donate via paypal by clicking in the donation box (upper right on this page), or you can mail your donation to: Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance, 4519 ½ University Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105. Or, you can drop off a donation to market staff and volunteers at any Farmers Market information table (during market hours).  The NFMA is registered with the WA Secretary of State Charitable Solicitations Program.
